Come Experience The IT and Internet World From CJCM’s Perspective

From Engineering to Computing

It is really funny how I got myself into the IT world. From the very beginning, I never liked the idea of having to stay in the office just facing the computer screen and tapping the keyboard all day long. It was just plain boredom for me at that time. So when I was offered to do Engineerig course at Bendigo College of Advanced Education, I never had to think twice.

However, my sailing in the Engineering world wasn’t that plain after all. Suddenly I couldnt cope with all the mathematical subjects in the Engineering course. It was just numbers and calculations and I found out that this was just much. I couldnt maintain my enthusiasm for long, as a result of that, I knew I was heading for disaster, and I wasnt wrong.

The final semester results came out. I only passed 3 subjects out of about 9 subjects, if I remember correctly. I was doomed. I knew I had to do something about it but I was just not interested in the course anymore. My unplanned plan B immediately came into picture. I wanted to change my course of study…but what would be my choice? What is really I wanted to do with my life? Honestly….at that time I didnt know. But plan B must be executed at all cost.

So I approached the Dean of Business School and inquired if there is still any available seat in the Accounting course, purely out of desperation. However, I was told all places in the Accounting course were fully taken. But……if I was interested in switching to Computing, he could immediately confirm a place for me. Pheww…..this was hard. Computing? That boring machine? My thought ran wild for a while…what was I going to do….looked like I didnt have much choice. Again…out of desperation I just said YES….and that was the day I got myself into the world of IT.

I reluctantly enrolled into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Computing), with a few credits given for my three subjects that I passed in my Engineering course. What lied ahead was totally beyond my expectation….I will share with you about my journey in the Computing studies in my next post.

How about you? Do you think you made the right choice when you 1st enrolled in your tertiary education?
